San Antonio’s architectural imaginary is rooted in its historic responsibility to architectural invention and reinvention in which architecture is never a completely private affair. The future of downtown San Antonio depends on how much new architectural imaginaries engage the public as much as the private, and cultural movements as much as individual subjectivities. Whether as a provocative idea or imagination, according to anthropologist Arjun Appadurai, there is hope that the new downtown could become a “staging ground for action, and not only for escape.”
